ISRC codes for your music - REQUIRED for digital distribution!
posted by Derek at CD Baby on Monday October 06 2003 @ 09:55PM PDT
    Digital Distribution

    About ISRC Codes - BACKGROUND:

The ISRC (International Standard Recording Code) is the international identification system for sound recordings and music videorecordings.

Each ISRC is a unique and permanent identifier for a specific recording, to help identify recordings for royalty payments. It's assigned PER TRACK, not per CD.

It stays with a recording, so that if that same recording is re-released on a different CD (like a soundtrack).

Notice I'm saying "recording" not "song", because it has nothing to do with the song underneath. If you (or anyone) records different versions or remixes of the same song, each track should have its own ISRC code.

ISRC CODES ARE FREE. No service charge. (Unlike the UPC Barcode.)

All digital-download stores require them. I hear European radio requires them, too.

How to get ISRC codes for your music

Pay attention here, because what I'm about to say is different than ANY other info you'll find out there:

Since this is an international standard, each country was assigned a 2-letter country code (US, FR, JP, etc.)

Each country can then give up to 32,768 "Registrant Codes" to companies in its territory. A registrant code was intended to be for a record label. Then the label/registrant would assign up to 100,000 "Designation Codes" per year. That's one per sound-recording (per-track).

Everything was fine until the army of independent artists came along, needing ISRC codes for Digital Distribution. Why? Because there are 47,000 independent artists on CD Baby! If every artist faxed in the form to the RIAA, requesting a registrant code, the whole system would break! It would be like assigning every available phone number in the country in one day.

So... I talked with the great helpful folks at the IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry) office in London. And the helpful folks at the RIAA. And we've got it all worked out.

CD Baby is allowed to assign you ISRC codes - FREE - and we'll do all the reporting of information back to the IFPI/RIAA for you. All with a single click inside your members login area. Everything will be registered as YOU - not us - using the info you have on file with us. Same as if you had done the paperwork and filed out the fax, except we'll be using up less registrant codes in the system. (They assigned CD Baby a few registrant codes, and I wrote a program that can assign you your own permanent valid ISRC codes there on the spot.)

IN SHORT: IF YOU GET YOUR ISRC CODES THROUGH CD BABY, YOU ARE ALL SET - THERE IS NOTHING ELSE YOU NEED TO DO. NO FAXES. NO FORMS. NO WAITING.

Just log in to your members area at https://members.cdbaby.com - and click "EDIT ALBUM INFO" next to your CD. You'll see the "REQUIRED INFO" area, where you can have us assign them.

Why did I go to all the trouble of hooking this up? Because I want you to be able to get your music out there into the paid-download services that require them. And this was a major hurdle.

    More Information about ISRC Codes:

Main homepage for the International Standard Recording Code http://www.ifpi.org/isrc/

RIAA's informational page about ISRCs: (read FAQ at the bottom) http://www.riaa.org/issues/audio/isrc_faq.asp

If you run a record label with many releases, you may want to get your own ISRC registrant code, by downloading the form, and faxing it to the RIAA:

    Hi,
I am using Nero burner when i burn a track with ISRC, how can varify the ISRC. In other words how can i see ISRC of a track in a CD.

DEREK -OUTSTANDING SYTEM IDEA! And as always, thanks for putting it in plain english.

Does anyone know how long it takes to receive the ISRC code back, after faxing in the application? I'm not finding it in the ISRC FAQs. I guess it depends on how many people are rushing in their faxes this week...

Our indie label has quite a few releases coming up so we may as well get it done.

the RIAA usually gets back to you with an ISRC client code within a couple days of receiving your fax.

    by Christina on Wednesday October 08 2003 @ 10:00AM PDT [ reply | parent ]
    DOH! Now I see it:

    Q. How long does it take for the RIAA to assign a Registrant Code?
    A. It takes 24 hours from our receipt of the request form. The request form can be faxed to us.

    1) what happens when you re-order your CD? don't you have to put that code number somewhere in the digital file of each song, or on the cover or somewhere?
    2) why do you recommend that a record label get its own ISRC, what is the difference if, as you state here, that each song will get its own number through your services, and that number just goes w/ the song, doesn't change if ownership or anything but the actual recording itself changes?

    thanks,
    Kathleen Williamson, Tucson,
    Owl's Nest Records.

by Derek at CD Baby on Sunday November 09 2003 @ 09:20PM PST [ reply | parent ]
#1 - if you re-manufacture the CD, yes just tell the manufacturer what your ISRC codes are and I think they can embed them into the CD itself, somehow. (Not visible. Only readable by computers or something.)

#2 - there's really no other advantage to doing all the work to sign up yourself. it's just that if you're a record label with dozens of releases you might as well assign the code yourself instead of having us do it for you.

    by Jimmie Vestal on Sunday June 22 2008 @ 06:05AM PDT [ reply | parent ]
If a one-person indie label wants to distribute individual digital tracks without a physical CD, how is a ISRC inserted in the mastering stage?

When CD Baby distributes our songs to iTunes, Napster, and to other companies, is the individual ISRC in the comments area of the MP3 ID tag?

Does the file itself look something like this example:
    us-hm2-03-34236_BrandNewBaby_JimmieVestal.mp3

are isrc codes the same as ascap's title codes? for example I looked up one of my tracks on the ascap site and it said: 2ND FLIGHT
    (Title Code: 501251872)
does this mean my titles already have isrc codes? this # may just be something for ascaps records now that I think of it.

by Derek at CD Baby on Monday November 10 2003 @ 01:09PM PST [ reply | parent ]
No. Totally different. I think that # is only for ASCAP.

Do I need to burn this code into each track of my CD and resend new stock to CDBaby? Or is this just for thge digital disti releases?

by Derek at CD Baby on Monday November 10 2003 @ 01:10PM PST [ reply | parent ]
No need to do anything. The ISRC is kept in the database for us to use for digital distribution, and for you to use if you need it for any future use.

If you do a re-pressing of your CD, it would be smart to tell the CD manufacturer your ISRC codes. That's why we put them there on your page for you to see, print, copy, etc.

Is the ISRC Code the same as the song code that you
get from Harry Fox Agency? (You get the song code
when you go to Songfile.com and apply for mechanical
    license from HFA).

by Derek at CD Baby on Tuesday December 09 2003 @ 06:23PM PST [ reply | parent ]
No no no! VERY different. Remember:

    - Harry Fox Agency is concerned with THE COMPOSITION (the words and music). The Harry Fox ID# is used ONLY by Harry Fox.

    - ISRC codes are for THE RECORDING (the actual finished master recording, no matter what song it is)

by Derek at CD Baby on Wednesday December 10 2003 @ 04:46PM PST [ reply | parent ]
    (1) - Yes once you ask us to assign you ISRC codes they are totally yours for all future time (for THOSE recordings - not others!) So any time if you're going to RE-manufacture the CD, definitely log in and get your ISRC codes from your account, and give them to your CD manufacturer.

    (2) - We don't sign up to BMI for you. Whether you sign with ASCAP, BMI, or SESAC is up to you and a totally separate thing we will NEVER touch on your behalf.

    Hi;
Was wondering if this ISRC # is basically like the bar code # you had us get from you.

Where your names is on it as the distributor or label.
I found this info out when I looked up our barcode we got from you, it said owed by CD baby
Our name was no where., not even the name of our CD.

You told us it was ours, but it has your name on it.

by Derek at CD Baby on Wednesday December 31 2003 @ 06:29AM PST [ reply | parent ]
ISRC : it's the same basic idea, yeah. If you really want to make sure CD Baby has no affiliation whatsover, just go register your own. No need to have us do it for you, except to save time.

    As for your UPC Barcode:

Where did you look up the barcode to find this? Maybe it was just using some tool that looked up the first 6 digits that are assigned to me, but not the last 4 digits that are assigned to you.

We register it with SoundScan as YOU, not us.

Hey Derek. Great service! Just wondering if there's an answer to a question I saw posted above -- is there any way for you to assign us ISRC codes _before_ our initial pressing? We don't even have an account with you yet, but would like the codes to be on the CDs that we send to you.

    Thanks!

by Derek at CD Baby on Tuesday September 14 2004 @ 10:40PM PDT [ reply | parent ]
Yep. Just sign it up to CD Baby, then get the ISRC codes from us online, then get the CDs pressed, then mail them after they're pressed.

Thank you for the valuable article.

I need an advice for embedding my ISRC codes to our disk.

We already have the codes and the records. We use CUE sheet (Feurio) for mastering. My drive understands ISRC codes.

Alas, when I scan the recorded master disk, it appears that it does not contain ISRC codes. How can I embed them properly?

Hi Guys just in the process of joining CD-BABY as i am soooooo impressed with all the useful stuff it gives to us indie artists.

Anyho in relation to somebody's question regarding how to embedd the ISRC code (just registered myself so will have my own codes soon)

I use Nero5 (from Ahead Software) and when making an audio CD you can assign ISRC codes in the properites section when selecting the track.

Also something else i have just discovered is ID3 tags for mp3s... as this made me think how are mp3s tracked (sorry i know i am playing catch up here) you can include your ISRC in the comments of the ID3 tack and this will be picked up along with title, artist etc. hope this helps and hello everybody i am new so please love me :)

Use Nero burning Rom which allows you to not only insert the ISRC codes but also the UPC number

    by Steve Sevek on Monday September 26 2005 @ 12:39PM PDT [ reply | parent ]
Please note however, when entering the ISRC codes using Nero Burning ROM you must eliminate the hyphens found for your codes at CD Baby. The hyphens are only used when the ISRC Code is visually presented.

The album I'm currently compiling has one song from a previous album and several songs in slightly re-mixed form. Which, if any, of the old ISRC codes need to be applied to the new album? The current wizard only allows for "all" or "none" so how can we create new ISRC codes for new songs while keeping the relevant old ones?

by Derek at CD Baby on Wednesday November 16 2005 @ 03:01PM PST [ reply | parent ]
    >> Which, if any, of the old ISRC codes need to be applied to the new album?

None, unless something is the EXACT SAME RECORDING. (No change in fade-in, fade-out, levels, mix, mastering, etc.)

If a single itty bitty thing changes, it is a new ISRC code, so that it can be uniquely identified.

    by Clator Butler on Saturday November 19 2005 @ 05:14PM PST [ reply | parent ]
Sounds like the first song will be the only one using the same ISRC. If the song is exactly the same, but the title has a purposeful change (the removal of a hyphen that's causing search problems) does that require a new ISRC code as well?

    by Enci on Wednesday November 30 2005 @ 09:11PM PST [ reply | parent ]
Would the cd *manufacturer* ever assign the ISRC code? or if requested was by the artist?

1.Is it the ISRC code that allow media players to recognize a disc and update track info when played?
2.If so, do you know how is the CD info submitted to the players(Real,Windows Media Player)

by Derek at CD Baby on Thursday January 26 2006 @ 04:16PM PST [ reply | parent ]
No - that's FreeDB and Gracenote. Two companies that count the number of tracks and duration of tracks on your CD, and look it up in the database that way. Neither have anything to do with the ISRC code at all.

    by Dsyl on Monday January 30 2006 @ 01:08PM PST [ reply | parent ]
Thanks for the quick answer Derek. I did go to both websites and looked around. I did have another question after visiting both sites.
Since FreeDB and Gracenote are essentially competitors, do you (or anyone else)know if it would hurt to submit to both?
