Scam for our artists to be aware of
posted by Joel @ CD Baby on Thursday August 21 2008 @ 11:28AM PDT
News from Inside I'm posting this on behalf of an artist just like you

    --

Hi Joel... I think I should warn you so that you might warn your dealers about a scam being foisted upon sellers on CD Baby.

I received an email via your site asking to buy 150 copies of one of my titles, when I agreed they said they would send a cheque, however they sent 5 times more than I asked for.

They then asked me to wire, by Western Union, the balance to a third party, I was suspicious about this as the cheque came from Spain but drawn on a UK bank account.

I contacted the bank concerned's fraud department who told me the cheque was a forgery and that no such account existed, this is a scam to get you to pay out cash before the cheque is cleared and you loose.

Please pass on this warning to all your sellers, I didn't fall for it but some might. Kind regards - KG

I know that most people who have been around the block once or twice won't, but there are always newbies and people whose reason is shadowed by their dreams, and I am glad Joel wrote this to let those artists who are less experienced with scams understand that not every opportunity is what it apppears to be, and several of them are out right scams and foolery.

If one recieves a notice that is too good to be true, it is worth coming to this forum and researching the facts behind it

Age-old scam here. Happens all the time on craigslist-type sites. Someone sends way more money than is appropriate for you guitar pedal or whatever and asks you to refund the money. Then the bank calls and you realize the check was a fraud. This is just a variation where they offer to buy hundreds of CD's, interesting variation but same tired scam.

    REMEMBER!

-If you are ever asked to send money, it is a scam. Period.

-Don't ever pay anyone on myspace or anywhere else for "promotion" or "getting you a major label deal" or anything like that. They take your money and sit on their ass and then tell you "shucks, no luck, sorry."

-If you ever hand over money at a gig, that is called "pay-to-play" and is an age-old scam. For example, they tell you to sell 30 $10 tickets to your friends and family. Typically its a "battle of the bands" or some type of "major label showcase" or something equally lame and it is always on an off-night.

    Smarten up!
    Peace

This same type of scam is also happening on eBay and Kijiji.

Another scam that I was recently subjected to on eBay was a fake shipping company. After winning a bid, I was contacted by the owner who then said his PayPal account was stolen and then directed me to a shipping company that was going to be held in trust of a wire transfer. The company then contacted me with the instructions. They even had a very nice web site for you to go look at! But being suspicious, I tried to do a white and yellow page search of the company because I had never heard of them before plus asking for a wire transfer. Further more, they never did give me a phone number to contact them. The web site didn't even have a number posted either. So I cancelled the deal and reported it to eBay (whether they did anything about it though) and asked the owner to make some other arrangements. Never heard back from him.

But make sure that you get a phone number that is traceable and actually call it. And NEVER wire any money before the goods are delivered. Get them to send it COD with a reputable shipping company if they can't provide you with a PayPal account. If they have a PayPal account, then they have a bank account, which can then be traceable back to their identity, should they default.
