What is the Story with Ruckus ?. Many Indies do not even receive a single cent from them. I have enguired from my Indie friends .They said the same thing NOT A CENT PAID. Who is familiar with Ruckus . It was set up for students . I am sure students are streaming and even downloading so why are they not paying Indie for the creative art of music which totally belongs to Indie and there fore indie deserves to be paid.
I welcome explanation from you all.

Hi Boss,
Ruckus really does pay and we really do pay those streams to our artists. It's important to remember that most people use iTunes (80% of the digital market). In fact college kids are getting iPods included in their tuition. Most of your sales will come from iTunes, Napster, Rhapsody, and AMAZON. You may never see sales of your music through these smaller sites like Ruckus unless you're actively marketing through them.
Please email cdbaby@cdbaby.com
if you'd like to discuss this further. Thanks!

We've been receiving some income from Ruckus - not much, but some. I think Chris's comments are important:
Number 1: iTunes rules at the moment. Expecting 'big sales' from the other vendors is not realistic. Ruckus is attempting to niche themselves into colleges, but just because they are "there" (available in some colleges) doesn't translate into students using the service. I've wondered if Ruckus isn't much more than a way for the college administrations to avoid being socked with lawsuits for illegal downloading by their students. And if so, it's ok with me - and my music gets a little exposure in the bargain.
Number 2: Our own promotion. Do we want college sales? Then we should perform at colleges. Do we want CD sales? Then we must sell (and promote) our CDs at performances. We generate excitement about our music by generating excitement about our music. How that happens is up to us - but we gotta do it!
My two cents.

I have been a member for 6 years and 68 companies have my music. Only a couple have reported sales, iTunes, musicNet,rapsody. I wonder about these companies and I think hmmm, who's making money here, me or them?

John,
The honest answer would be neither. If they are not reporting sales, they're not making
money off of your music. The number one way you are going to generate sales, is by
directing fans to the places where your music is available. iTunes is by far the most popular
place to buy downloads, so pointing people there is a must. Outside of iTunes and CD Baby,
I would check out some of those other digital services that are a little more obscure. Some of
them offer some interesting features that iTunes doesn't. If you find something that you
think might increase your sales, be sure to let all your fans know about it. Ultimately, I look
at it this way - most of your download sales will come through iTunes, but it's good to have
your music everywhere possible as you never know who might stumble across you music in
another store, but don't count on an income stream from those stores.

for what it's worth, they've paid me $2.14 over the past half-decade or so.
I concur with Kevin - if you're not seeing anything, they're not selling anything. And if you've got proof otherwise (like, a sales receipt showing a sale through their service) I'm sure the CDBaby staff (and perhaps legal department) would be quite interested to see it.

Hi Kevin, thanks for answering my question. Your right, if they are not reporting sales, they're not making money off of my music. I will have to do some more self promotion to get better sales. Hopefully I will see some sales from these companies in the future, which would be very cool to see.

Im not sure what has happened with Itunes over the last few months, I used to get sales and streams from itunes, but nothing over the last few months 6-12. What the heck is going on?? The largest problem with Itunes, Napster, Amazon are they do not have a A-Z browse that customers can easliy stummble upon ALL artist. Alot of artist do not play live so the promotion of promoting at gigs dont work:/ HOPEFULLY one day these companies will wake up to this Huge problem with a easy fix ans sales will flow for all!!!.
